THE CORONADO BOOZE-DOGGLE
This past weekend Tim and I decided we needed a little staycation in our beautiful sunny San Diego town. It was time to refresh our selves. And knowing us- we weren’t going to settle for anything normal.
I jumped onto Airbnb, which is our preferred method of finding places to crash. I kept looking for “treehouses”. Unfortunately, we live in San Diego.. treehouses don’t really exist. Well, not the kind where I’d walk out to a sloth hanging on my hammock over looking the amazon river. So I switched my focus to the water. I ended up finding a gentleman named William who rented out his awesome sailboat to sleep on the water. I instantly booked it and told Tim we were going to sleep on a sailboat this weekend. He of course said “Yeah, did you know I was a ‘Captain’.” As I eye-rolled, we got ready to head to Harbor Island. We packed 2 days worth of clothes and 5 days worth of wine.
We took a short 20 minute drive to Harbor Island, and found ourselves at the dock. Made our way to the boat and we were pleasantly surprised. The boat was perfect for the two of us. I’m sure the boat could easily fit 5 people, but Tim being as big as he is, it was quite the scene watching him walk around the inside.

The boat had a full kitchen, living area, and sleeping quarters that was oddly shaped. Not made for a 6 foot man to sleep comfortably. We had to sleep sideways in order for Tim to avoid sleeping in fetal position all night.
While the boat was great, we decided to take a Lyft to Coronado Island and do our own day of bar-doggling. We got dropped off on the main strip of the island and started walking about. We were hoping our first stop would be the Coronado Island Brewing Co., but that ended up being an hour wait and bar was packed. While Coronado was bustling with some great high end places, one ‘Little’ place caught our eye. Funny thing is, most people probably would have walked right by it or avoided the dark and dreary entrance. Tim and I automatically stopped, looked at one another and said “YEP!”. We knew we should have stuck to our intuition of finding the hole in the walls that we love so much.

We waltz right into The Little Club. This bar was exactly our taste. Few locals, juke box, pool, and all around awesome time. We were met with Laurie, the bartender and a few locals that made our short stay worth remembering as our favorite bar on Coronado Island. Need I mention the moment Tim decided he wanted to trade his hat for the hat that a guy was wearing and began an hour of bartering…he was unsuccessful. But, I must say, he has traded his shirt for another guy’s shirt a few years back at a pizza shop. Nothing new. ANYWAYS, a few beers, a long island, and Funyuns down the hatch, we decided to make our way to Danny’s Palm Bar & Grill.

This bar is known to for its dedication to Navy SEALs whom have passed through the years. With photos surrounding the bar commemorating those who served, it was a feeling of instant gratitude to the brave who have served our country. I had been to this bar once before years ago and had a wonderful experience, but this time around, Sunday day time, let’s just say the attitude of the bartender was not appealing. Yet, we did happen to make a new friend whom was sitting 2 chairs from us and Tim insisted on buying him a cold one. Another few bottles of beer down the hatch, another new friend later, we were headed off to find some food. I was getting pretty HANGRY. And my hangry attitude is far worse than the upset bartender.

We found ourselves at a small shop called Lobster West. And boy oh boy! Was I happy! Since Tim is from New Hampshire he’s used to “Maine Lobster”, so he compares almost all lobster rolls to that of the East Coast. For all of those who don’t know this (I just learned this when I started dating Tim), East Coast lobsters have claws and West Coast ones don’t. Mind BLOWN right?! I can’t give you the logistics as to why, but go ahead and google it.
We ordered the trio of lobster, crab, and shrimp. Andddd of course, I nice cold beer. Done and devoured, we LOVED the place. And the cashier/waitress were incredibly sweet and attentive. We have been craving it ever since!
After the lobster-seafood bonanza, we headed back for one more night cap at our favorite of the days; The Little Club! After a nightcap of a few more beers, maybe a shot or two, we found ourselves back on our sail boat for a good night’s rest.
All in all, a successful boondoggle for us. And while we didn’t hit any of the big busy hot spots, we truly enjoyed getting to know the local joints, supporting them, and meeting some pretty kick ass people. Plus- we got to sleep on a boat and wake up to seagulls chirping!
Signing off!
